Limescale on a bathroom countertop: how to remove it

Traces of the morning on a marble countertop

On granite, quartzite and sintered stone you can remove water deposits with a limescale remover and prevent them by wiping the surface dry. On marble and limestone never use vinegar or descalers, because they etch the stone. There you use deposit removers made for acid-sensitive stone.

Where the white deposit comes from

Hard water contains dissolved minerals. When drops dry around the tap and basin, they leave white marks, and over time a thick layer of deposit.

First: what stone is it

This decides what you can clean it with.

  • Granite, quartzite, sintered stone: tolerate most stone cleaners.
  • Marble, limestone, travertine: react with acids, so descalers and vinegar will leave dull spots.

What to remove it with

On acid-resistant stone, the deposit is removed with a stone cleaner made for this kind of buildup, following the instructions, then rinsed and wiped dry.1 On marble, use only products made for acid-sensitive stone and remove the deposit gently by hand with a soft sponge.1

What not to do

  • Do not use vinegar or tap descalers on marble.2
  • Do not scrape the deposit with a knife or a steel scourer.
  • Do not leave a product on for long without testing it in a hidden spot.

Everyday habits

  • Wipe the countertop dry after brushing your teeth and washing your face.
  • Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner.2
  • Keep cosmetics on a tray.

When choosing a countertop

If you have very hard water and do not want to wipe the countertop every day, choose granite, quartzite or sintered stone. Marble in a bathroom is beautiful, but it needs attention.
