Stone by the fireplace: what handles the heat

The highest temperature is right at the firebox opening and on the hearth slab in front of it. A dense, low-porosity stone such as granite works best there. Further out, on the surround and mantel, it is much cooler, and marble and quartzite also work well. The stone is fitted according to the fireplace insert manufacturer's instructions.
Where it gets hot
The firebox opening and the slab right in front of it get the hottest. Further out, on the surround and mantel, it is much cooler.1 So you do not need one stone for everything around a fireplace.
By the firebox
Stone right at the opening heats up and cools down every time you light a fire. Dense, low-porosity stone handles this best.1 Granite works very well here. The insert manufacturer gives the required distances, and you have to keep to them.
Surround and mantel
Here the temperature is much lower, so marble, quartzite and granite all work well.1 Marble above a fireplace is a classic, and a mantel made from a thick slab looks solid.
Hearth slab
It protects the floor from sparks and embers. It must be non-combustible and stand up to knocks from logs and the poker. Granite with a satin or brushed finish shows scratches less.
Soot and smoke
Light, absorbent stone above the opening can darken from smoke over time. Sealing and regular cleaning with a mild cleaner help.
Sintered stone
Sintered stone is non-combustible and heat resistant. It works on the surround of modern fireplaces, in large slabs with no joints.
What to prepare
The insert model and its instructions with the required distances. Based on that, we will choose the stone and the fitting method.
